Product Discovery

Product Discovery is the phase during which a product team seeks to understand user needs, explore possible solutions, and validate their value before developing them.
It combines interviews, workshops, prototypes, and tests to reduce the risk of building the wrong thing and prioritise engineering work on what truly matters.

Product discovery in practice

Why do Product Discovery

  • Reduce the risk of building the wrong thing - number 1 cost in product.
  • Align teams on the problem before the solution.
  • Prioritise based on facts rather than opinions.

Typical methods

  • User interviews (5 to 10 per segment).
  • Field observations, shadowing.
  • Design Sprint, Lean Inception, Event Storming workshops.
  • Testable prototypes, short surveys.
  • Analysis of existing data.

Caveats

  • Do not ask users what they want - observe what they do and listen to their problems.
  • Do Discovery in parallel with Delivery, not before - it's continuous.
  • Decide at the end - Discovery without a decision is just an expensive debate.
