Minimum Viable Product (MVP)

A Minimum Viable Product (MVP) is the simplest version of a product, containing just enough features to be usable by real users and validate a business hypothesis.
Its objective is not to be complete, but tolearn quickly : confront its idea with the market, gather feedback and iterate. It's a key step to limit development risks and costs.

The MVP in practice

Why start with an MVP

  • Test a value hypothesis on a real market before investing heavily.
  • Limit the cost of failure - we build the minimum, so we lose little if the idea doesn't take off.
  • Learn quickly - concrete user feedback is infinitely more valuable than a theoretical market study.

How to frame an MVP

  1. Identify the core value proposition and ONE feature that proves it.
  2. Explicitly list everything we won't do in v1 - it's often harder than listing what we do.
  3. Define measurable success criteria : conversion rate, NPS, 30-day retention, activation rate.
  4. Choose a manageable scope - typically 6 to 12 weeks of development.

Caveats

  • "MVP" ≠ "shoddy product". The usability and reliability of the first version determine adoption.
  • Falling in love with your MVP - it serves to learn, not to last. Be ready to pivot or discard.
  • Confusing POC and MVP - the POC validates technical feasibility, the MVP validates market appetite. The two don't have the same objective.
