Design Thinking

Design Thinking is a user-centred design methodology that combines field understanding, creativity, and rapid iteration to solve complex problems.
It is generally organised around five stages: empathy, definition, ideation, prototyping, and testing. Applied to digital, it allows for the design of genuinely useful products before writing a single line of code.

Design Thinking in practice

The five stages

  1. Empathy - understand the user in their real-world context.
  2. Definition - formulate the problem to be solved, not the solution.
  3. Ideation - generate a large number of solutions without censorship.
  4. Prototyping - quickly materialise the most promising ideas.
  5. Test - confront prototypes with real users.

When to use it

  • Launching a new product or service.
  • Redesigning a complex journey.
  • Transforming a team or an internal process.
  • Incremental or disruptive innovation.

Caveats

  • Risk of 'theatre' if the approach remains superficial.
  • Must lead to concrete execution, not just post-it notes.
  • Better a day of workshop followed by genuine iteration than a week of debates.
