Userflow

A userflow is a visual representation of the journey a user takes in an application or website to complete a specific task (e.g., signing up, purchasing, contacting…).
It allows product and design teams to detect friction, simplify steps and ensure that each screen plays its part in achieving the user's objective.

Userflows in practice

Why map userflows

  • Identify friction on a key journey: sign-up, purchase, contact, support.
  • Align product, design, and tech on the steps to be designed.
  • Detect forgotten states - errors, edge cases, rollbacks.

How to build a useful userflow

  • Start with a precise user objective ('buy a product', 'recover a password').
  • Describe each step: action, screen, decision, result.
  • Identify loops, potential drop-offs, and possible gains.
  • Test on real users - what we imagine ≠ what they do.

Caveats

  • Too detailed = unusable. Maintain a readable level.
  • Update when the product evolves, otherwise it becomes a lie on paper.
