Sprint

A Sprint is a short work cycle - generally one to three weeks - used in agile methodologies to produce a functional increment of the product.
It starts with planning, proceeds with short daily stand-ups, then ends with a review and a retrospective with the team and stakeholders. This rhythm allows for regular delivery, quick adjustments, and maintaining strong momentum on the project.

Sprint in Practice

Anatomy of a Sprint

  • Planning - content selection, estimation, team commitment.
  • Execution - short daily (15 min max), work focused on the objective.
  • Review - demonstration to stakeholders, backlog adjustment.
  • Retrospective - continuous improvement of the way of working.

Typical Durations

  • 1 week - high cadence, ideal for product launch.
  • 2 weeks - standard duration, good balance.
  • 3 weeks - for subjects requiring more depth.

Caveats

  • A Sprint has an objective, not just a list of tickets.
  • Monitor velocity but do not make it a managerial KPI - it's a planning tool.
  • If all Sprints overrun, it's an indication that the upstream scoping is not good.
