Node

Node.js is a runtime environment that allows JavaScript to be used server-side, where this language was historically limited to the browser.
Thanks to Node, the same team can develop the front-end and back-end with the same language, which brings consistency and productivity. It is particularly well-suited for APIs, real-time applications, and service-oriented architectures.

Node.js in practice

Why Node transformed the back-end

  • Same language and ecosystem on server and client side - very productive full-stack JS teams.
  • Non-blocking nature (I/O) - excellent for APIs and real-time architectures.
  • Huge package ecosystem npm.

Ideal use cases

  • APIs REST or GraphQL.
  • Real-time applications: WebSocket, chat, collaboration.
  • Microservices and serverless functions (AWS Lambda, Cloud Functions).
  • Internal tools and automation scripts.

Caveats

  • Single-thread can become a bottleneck for intensive computation - outsource or use worker threads.
  • Properly manage the security of npm dependencies : regular audit, locked versions.
