Framework

A framework is a structured set of tools, conventions, and components provided to accelerate and frame the development of an application, whether for front-end, back-end, or mobile.
Unlike a simple library, a framework imposes an architecture and best practices. This allows several developers to work consistently on the same project and to get started more quickly.

The framework in practice

Why use a framework

  • Consistent architecture - faster onboarding for developers.
  • Security, performance, and pre-wired best practices.
  • Rich ecosystem (auth, ORM, tests, i18n) rather than reinventing everything.

How to choose a framework

  • Maturity and size of the community (a guarantee of longevity).
  • Suitability for the type of product (SaaS, e-commerce, mobile, embedded).
  • Skills available in the team.
  • Roadmap and stability of the maintainer.

Caveats

  • Vendor lock-in - a framework change can be very costly.
  • Over-engineering - a heavy framework on a small project cripples productivity.
