The backend refers to the part of an application that runs server-side, invisible to the end-user. It manages business logic, databases, authentication, and communications with external services.

It contrasts with the frontend, which is the visible part of the application (interface displayed in the browser or on mobile). A good digital product relies on a solid architecture between the two.
