FTP

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is a historical protocol for transferring files between a computer and a server via the internet.
Still used for deploying sites, exchanging data streams or providing data to partners, it tends to be replaced by more secure variants such as SFTP ou FTPS.

When FTP is still used

  • Recurrent data exchanges between partners (catalogues, EDI invoices, stocks).
  • Deployment of historical sites - less and less.
  • Connection to old industrial systems.

Modern best practices

  • Prefer SFTP or FTPS (encryption) over cleartext FTP.
  • Key-based authentication rather than password-based.
  • Restrict authorised IPs (whitelist).
  • Audit transfers (logs, alerting).

When to prefer an alternative

  • For new projects: REST/GraphQL APIs, webhooks, message queues, S3.
  • For web deployment: CI/CD pipelines rather than manual FTP.
