Migration

A migration is the transfer of an existing system to a new environment: change of technology, hosting, CMS, database, or architecture.
It's a sensitive operation that requires rigour and a sound strategy (scope, data to be migrated, switchover plan, tests) to avoid any regression and limit impact on users.

Migration in practice

Typical migration scenarios

  • Hosting change or move to the cloud.
  • Technological overhaul (PHP to Symfony, AngularJS to React).
  • CMS migration (WordPress to Astro, Drupal to Strapi).
  • Database switch (MySQL to PostgreSQL, on-premise to managed).
  • Historical data transfer between two ERPs or CRMs.

Methodology

  1. Map the existing - scope, dependencies, volumes.
  2. Define the minimum scope to be taken over (often narrower than expected).
  3. Switchover plan - big bang or progressive depending on the risk.
  4. Test in a mirror environment before the actual switchover.
  5. Rollback plan mandatory.

Caveats

  • Data - quality, integrity, GDPR during data migration.
  • SEO if website redesign - maintain 301 redirections.
  • Client / user communication beforehand, not on D-day.
